What it does
Clever Cloud is a managed application platform for deploying services such as Node.js, Python, Java, Docker, PHP, Go and static sites. A console wizard connects an application to a runtime and deployment source; Git pushes or FTP transfers then trigger deployment. The platform also offers databases, persistent storage and other add-ons, plus logs and metrics for running applications. It is a runtime platform rather than a virtual machine where the customer configures the operating system.
From repository to running service
Start with an application tracked in Git, or use FTP where the runtime supports it. In the console, choose an organization, create an application, select its language or framework, and set its horizontal and vertical scaling limits. The wizard can also attach an add-on or supply environment variables. Once a Git remote is configured, pushing a branch starts the documented deployment flow; the console exposes deployment activity, logs, metrics and consumption. These steps describe the published workflow, not a deployment performed for this entry.
The runtime environment is immutable and starts fresh. Do not treat the app's local filesystem as durable storage: the getting-started guide points to a file-system bucket, object storage or a managed database for persistent data. That distinction matters for uploads, sessions and stateful services.
Operational tradeoff
Clever Cloud handles runtime operations such as monitoring and updates, so the user does not administer a guest OS. You still choose the runtime, configure the application, decide how much it may scale and connect any required data services. The pricing page describes per-second billing within configured limits and says new accounts receive trial credits without requiring a payment card. Add-on plans marked free are described as suitable for testing, not production, because they may use shared resources without guaranteed performance or stability. No workload total can be inferred without selecting products and resource sizes.
Strengths
- Git or FTP deployment is paired with a supported runtime rather than requiring the customer to build and patch a VM image.
- The console brings application logs, metrics, scaling controls and add-on configuration into the same workflow.
- The product advertises an API, CLI and Terraform provider for automation beyond the console.
Watch out for
- Application runtimes are immutable, so files that must persist need a separate storage or database service.
Best for
- Teams deploying supported web runtimes without taking responsibility for guest operating-system maintenance.
- Developers who want application deployment and managed data add-ons in one provider console.
