What it does

Clip Studio Paint is a drawing application for desktop, tablets and phones. It combines brushes, fill and selection tools, editable vector lines and reference aids. Smartphone users have a recurring free allowance; other devices have trial and paid licensing options.

Vector layers keep drawn lines editable, including resizing and erasing at intersections. Reference tools include poseable 3D figures, head models and perspective rulers.

For a print-ready illustration, switch to Studio Mode. Open View > Color profile > Preview Settings and choose the printer’s colour profile. Then use File > Export (Single Layer), select a suitable format such as TIFF or PSD, choose CMYK color and enable Embed ICC profile. These print controls are not available in Simple Mode.

Smartphone EX features are free for 30 hours each month, with automatic saving at the limit. Desktop perpetual licences are listed at USD 63 for PRO and USD 277 for EX; later feature updates need separate upgrade or Update Pass terms. Monthly and annual subscriptions cover additional device options. Paid licences require a Clip Studio account, and downloaded materials can carry their own access conditions.

Strengths

  • Vector lines can be resized and erased at intersections after drawing.
  • Print export can embed the printer’s chosen colour profile.

Watch out for

  • Perpetual licences are limited to Windows and Mac.
  • The recurring free allowance is limited to smartphone use; print export settings require Studio Mode.

Best for

  • Character illustration
  • Artists using reference and material libraries
