What it does

Google Data Studio connects data sources to customizable reports with charts, filters and multiple pages. A no-charge self-service tier supports reporting, while Pro adds team and support capabilities.

Google Data Studio turns connected data into reports with charts, filters and multiple pages. It is useful for a marketing report that draws on sources such as Google Analytics, Google Ads, BigQuery or a spreadsheet, provided the report author has access to each source. The self-service version is free; Pro adds organizational management and support.

Create a report from a source

Sign in, choose Create > Report, and use Add data to connect a new source or select an existing one under My data sources. Select the connector, provide its required credentials and click Add. An initial table appears in the report, giving you a starting point for choosing fields.

The properties panel on the right controls the chart's data and style. Choose a layout that suits the audience: freeform gives desktop layout control, while responsive reports adapt to different screens. Rename the report from Untitled Report so it is recognizable when shared.

Before comparing campaigns, make sure the sources use compatible dates and definitions. A report can display several datasets, but that does not make differently defined conversion or revenue fields equivalent. Connectors and source permissions remain part of the reporting setup, including after the report is shared or embedded.

Strengths

  • Connectors bring several kinds of business data into visual reports.
  • Reports support interactive filters, sharing and embedding.

Watch out for

  • Reports depend on working connectors and access to the underlying data.

Best for

  • Marketing and business teams assembling shared reports from existing sources
