What it does

Coast Capital combines credit-union membership with branch service, online banking and a mobile app. Free Chequing has no monthly account fee or minimum balance, although sending Interac e-Transfers and using certain ATMs costs extra. Its digital banking supports recurring bills, mobile cheque deposits and account statements.

Coast Capital’s digital banking can submit up to five bill payments together and set recurring payments. Save a frequently used transaction as a Favourite to make the next occurrence easier to find. Interac e-Transfers and transfers from linked external accounts provide other ways to move money.

What Free Chequing includes

There is no monthly account fee or minimum balance. Everyday transactions are unlimited, but sending an Interac e-Transfer costs C$1.50; receiving one is free. Coast Capital and THE EXCHANGE network ATMs are free to use. An Interac-network ATM elsewhere in Canada costs C$2.50, and international withdrawals cost C$5 plus 2%. Electronic statements are free; printed statements cost C$3 monthly.

An online application collects personal details and checks identity through a credit bureau. If that check cannot be completed, Coast Capital can send instructions for verification at Canada Post. The first deposit includes C$5 for membership shares, which is an investment in membership rather than an account fee. After the deposit is processed, the emailed card number provides access to digital banking while the physical card is being delivered.

The mobile app accepts cheque deposits, while online banking holds eStatements. Money Manager adds spending and budget views within the account service. A branch and ATM finder helps with tasks that need in-person access.
