What it does

Coinbase Advanced provides spot order books, configurable trading workspaces and APIs for managing orders from other software. It is part of a Coinbase account, with available markets determined by region and product eligibility. Spot integrations and international derivatives now use different trading gateways.

Choose how the limit order may execute

Select a market pair, Buy or Sell, and Limit. Set the price and size, then choose execution and expiration instructions before confirming. Price shortcuts include MID for the midpoint and BID for the current bid.

Post only rejects the entire order if it would execute immediately on arrival. Allow Taker permits that immediate fill, with any remainder able to stay on the book. This setting matters when the purpose is to add an order to the market rather than accept an existing price.

A market order instead uses the current available liquidity, so the displayed price is not a guaranteed fill price. If an order is rejected for size or decimal precision, the error identifies the permitted amount or precision; reduce the input accordingly rather than repeatedly resubmitting it.

Where to check the cost

Advanced uses transaction-based maker and taker fees. An order filled partly on arrival and partly later can have different rates for those portions. The account's fee tier when the order is placed determines the charge.

Open Coinbase Advanced fees while signed in and inspect Fees, Tier requirements and Stablecoin pairs. The qualifying tier uses the most favorable applicable trading-volume or USDC-balance requirement. Certain pairs have separate schedules, and the order preview displays the actual fee.

Account access and regional checks

The US agreement requires US residence and age 18 or above. Registration supports email, Apple or Google sign-in, with phone verification and identity checks. Other countries have their own onboarding rules and product availability.

For example, UK signup includes a 24-hour waiting period, investor classification and an appropriateness assessment. The current non-US account instructions also request tax-residency information in specified jurisdictions. Complete the applicable account requirements before assuming that a displayed market is available to trade.

The API route depends on the product

REST handles spot order placement, editing and cancellation, while WebSocket connections carry prices, books and account updates. Coinbase publishes an official Python toolkit alongside sample integrations in other languages.

International derivatives moved from INTX to a Deribit-powered gateway on 1 October 2026. That gateway uses JSON-RPC over HTTP or WebSocket and can retain the existing CDP API key. Spot and US futures remain on the Advanced Trade API. An existing international perpetuals integration therefore needs the migration documentation, even when its account key has not changed.

Strengths

  • Limit execution settings distinguish posted orders from immediately matched orders
  • Spot APIs combine order changes with live market and account events

Watch out for

  • Post-only orders are rejected if they would execute immediately
  • International derivatives use a separate gateway and protocol from spot trading

Best for

  • Eligible Coinbase spot traders, including verified US adults, who need order controls or account integrations
