What it does

Coincheck provides crypto purchases, exchange order books and yen funding for eligible residents of Japan. Its marketplace quotes and exchange orders have different cost structures. Developers can also connect trading, balances and funding records through APIs, connections that let other software read data or manage an account.

Personal accounts are for residents of Japan

Coincheck currently accepts individual applicants aged 18 to 74 who live in Japan. Personal verification uses the iOS or Android app; corporate onboarding follows a separate browser process and includes receiving a postal card.

The current help page also flags two newly named Japanese residence-document types that are not yet accepted. Foreign residents should check the exact document list before starting, rather than assuming every residence card qualifies.

The application includes a passkey and tax details

Register an email address and password, confirm the email, then follow the app's account-opening steps. A passkey is mandatory and is registered using the device's biometric authentication or screen lock.

After the required disclosures, select nationality and review the account types. A spot account is required. For Japanese nationals, the leverage account is initially selected too; if you want only spot, clear that selection and confirm that you are not applying for both.

Submit the appropriate identity documents and personal information, then wait for the decision by email. The current sequence also requires a tax-residency submission before services become available.

Exchange fees differ from the purchase quote

The exchange schedule lists zero maker and taker fees for BTC and ETH. Some other assets carry charges: ETC, for example, is 0.05% maker and 0.10% taker. These rates cover the exchange and its API, not every Coincheck purchase route.

The marketplace lists no separate transaction fee, but its quoted price includes a fee-equivalent amount, normally 0.1% to 5%. Certain assets can reach 1.7% to 7%, and unusual market conditions can exceed the stated range. Compare the actual buy and sell quote instead of treating the word free as the total cost.

Yen bank deposits have no Coincheck charge, although the sending bank may charge. A yen withdrawal costs ¥407. Convenience-store and quick deposits use their own amount-based schedule, while crypto withdrawal costs depend on the asset and network conditions.

Records for a custom integration

The public API provides prices, trades and order books. Private functions add order creation and cancellation, balances and transaction records. Crypto deposits and sends have their own histories; yen withdrawals use bank-account and withdrawal-request functions.

WebSocket channels report market activity and private order or execution events separately. API permissions can be set by function and limited to selected IP addresses, allowing a reporting connection to be configured around the records it needs.

Strengths

  • The app makes the spot-versus-leverage account choice explicit during onboarding
  • API functions cover crypto transfers and yen withdrawal records alongside orders

Watch out for

  • New individual accounts are limited to Japan residents aged 18 to 74
  • Japanese applicants should review the preselected leverage-account option

Best for

  • Japan residents comparing yen-funded crypto purchases or exchange-account reporting
