What it does
Coin Metrics supplies market feeds, blockchain measures, reference prices and indexes through Talos. Its free Community data includes selected datasets without account credentials; paid products provide broader professional access.
An exchange trade, a reference price and a blockchain activity measure answer different questions. Coin Metrics keeps those products separate. Begin with the coverage browser and the relevant metric definition before choosing assets or a historical period for a report. Studio provides charts when a visual comparison is enough.
For an export through the API, the connection for other software, specify the assets, metrics, frequency and time range. Supported requests accept CSV for a spreadsheet or JSON for a program. A large result can span pages: follow the returned next_page_url until the result is complete. The Python client also offers export_to_csv and export_to_json methods.
Timestamps need care when joining datasets. Individual trades and similar events use a point-in-time timestamp, while interval totals and candles generally identify the beginning of their interval. Align those conventions before comparing a daily measure with a stream of trades.
Where Community access stops
The free data is a subset of the professional products. Atlas Community has selected assets and thirty days of history; granular Reference Rates Community access is limited to seven data points. The community license is Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0, and client-services support is excluded.
Community requests are limited to ten in a six-second sliding window per IP address, with reduced download speed. A 429 response means the request rate has been exceeded. If a Google Sheet includes a paid API key in its query cells, everyone with access to that sheet can read the key.
Strengths
- The coverage browser separates dataset availability from asset popularity
- Reference prices and raw exchange trades have distinct products
- Data can feed Google Sheets as well as ordinary CSV files
Watch out for
- Community licensing excludes commercial use
- Free Atlas and granular reference-price history have explicit limits
Best for
- Researchers choosing a reproducible crypto data series
- Developers exporting specified metrics for analysis
