What it does
Science Museum Group’s online collection publishes objects, people and archival documents from its museums. Subjects include medicine, transport, computing, photography and industrial history.
In Search, use Has Image to remove records without photographs and Non-Commercial Use to find the relevant Creative Commons selection. Category, maker, place and collection filters can then narrow a broad technology search to a particular object or archive.
An image’s Use this image section gives its licence and download route. The Nokia handset record, for example, has several views marked CC BY-NC-SA 4.0: attribution is required, commercial use is excluded, and adaptations must use the same licence. Its separate License link leads to the Science & Society Picture Library for commercial enquiries.
Image permissions are separate from the record text. The site releases basic catalogue fields under CC0 and descriptive text under CC BY 4.0. The Cite this page section supplies the object number and record address for a caption or reference.
Strengths
- Image and reuse filters narrow searches before you open individual records.
- Image permissions and catalogue-data licences are identified separately.
Watch out for
- Noncommercial image licences do not cover commercial reproduction.
Best for
- Editors sourcing images of science, industry and technological history
