What it does
LACMA’s collection records combine artwork information with reproductions. Selected high-resolution images are available free for reuse; protected images have separate permission requirements.
The Veracruz warrior sculpture with accession number M.2016.179.3 has a Download Images control and an explicit statement that its high-resolution image is supplied free without restrictions under LACMA’s terms. The record also gives its medium, dimensions, collecting area and credit line.
For other works, look for the Public Domain High Resolution Image Available designation or the equivalent rights statement. Credit the artist and LACMA, including the museum URL. Protected content has only limited personal, noncommercial permission unless further rights are granted. Other reproduction requests go through Art Resource, with charges depending on the use and available photography. Third-party rights can still apply.
Strengths
- Eligible records identify images supplied free for reuse.
- Object details provide accession numbers and artwork credits.
Watch out for
- An image-download control alone does not establish unrestricted reuse.
Best for
- Designers finding artwork images with documented reuse terms
