What it does

ColorMagic offers a free text-based palette generator and image-colour extraction. It can begin with a mood, name or hex code, then provide colour codes, CSS, a PNG palette image or a shareable link. Saving favourites requires login.

A material or setting gives the text generator a direction; a hex value provides an existing colour to build around. Generate, inspect the palette and choose the handoff that suits the next step: individual codes, CSS or a PNG reference. Generating, viewing and copying do not require an account.

For photographs, select a file or paste a direct image URL. The image tool groups colours and takes distinct representatives from bright, muted, light and dark roles. It says extraction runs locally in the browser and nothing is uploaded unless the palette is saved.

Developers can use the free palette-search API with a text query. Its example response includes colours, tags and a palette label. The API page warns that it can change or disappear without notice, which matters when building a continuing integration.

Strengths

  • Text, an existing colour and images provide different starting inputs.
  • Code, CSS, PNG and link output suit several handoff needs.

Watch out for

  • Saving favourite palettes requires login.
  • The published API can change or be removed without warning.

Best for

  • Exploring colour directions from a visual idea or an existing image.
