What it does

The International Color Consortium publishes the specifications behind ICC colour profiles, alongside registries, technical notes and diagnostic resources. Its material connects profile formats with the behaviour of colour-managed software.

The specification guide explains when to use ICC v4 and when requirements such as spectral data may call for iccMAX. Versioned documents and amendments let implementers identify the rules a workflow follows.

For a concrete diagnostic task, the Probe Profile deliberately changes image colours to reveal which rendering intent software applied. In the basic probe, cyan, magenta and yellow distinguish three rendering transforms; lightness differences help expose the proofing transform. These are analysis profiles, not normal display or printer calibrations. The site explicitly notes that its v4 probe does not comply with the ordinary v4 measurement requirement.

Profile reuse depends on the copyright owner. ICC-owned profiles have broad reuse permission, while other creators' profiles need their own licence check.

Strengths

  • Probe profiles expose otherwise undocumented rendering choices.
  • Specifications, profile registries and explanatory notes are linked in one reference.

Watch out for

  • Diagnostic probe profiles deliberately distort colours and are unsuitable as ordinary calibration profiles.

Best for

  • Colour-management developers tracing profile and rendering behaviour
