What it does
ColorZilla provides colour-picking extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Its Chrome tools sample pixels or areas, analyse page-element colours and retain a history of selected values. A separate online tool creates CSS gradients.
Check the colour behind an interaction
Start the eyedropper from the toolbar and click the desired point. If a hover state changed the result, Resample last location reads that position again. The picker then adjusts RGB or HSB components, and Auto Copy can send the chosen format directly to the clipboard.
The Webpage Color Analyzer links colours to DOM elements. Hovering a colour locates corresponding elements, while the inspection tools expose tag, class, ID and dimensions. Sampling can use one pixel or a larger area, up to a 25-by-25-pixel preset, to average a textured region.
Chrome requires access to website data for sampling. The developer states that the extension does not collect browsing activity; this permission still needs to be accepted when installing it.
Strengths
- Resampling helps compare a hovered element with its ordinary state
- DOM analysis connects a colour with the elements using it
- Clipboard format and sampling area are configurable
Watch out for
- The Chrome extension needs website-data access for its sampling function
Best for
- Inspecting and transferring colours from an existing web interface
