What it does

Commonwealth Bank’s app brings spending, saving and upcoming bills into Insights. Customers can review selected accounts and use budgets alongside their everyday banking. Smart Access has a conditional monthly fee, while Streamline Basic provides a free account for eligible concession customers.

Search for Insights in the app. Choose the accounts included and a weekly, fortnightly or monthly period, with a start date that matches payday. The setting applies to both spending and saving. Joint-account views include everyone’s activity; exclude that account when it does not belong in the review.

To correct a category, open the transaction, tap Change under Spend details and choose the new category. Insights also shows predicted bills and savings comparisons. It replaces Money Plan and Cash Flow View and is being released gradually, so it may not yet appear for every customer.

Everyday banking costs

Smart Access costs A$4 monthly. The fee is waived with at least A$2,000 deposited in the calendar month, excluding bank-initiated transactions, or while the holder is under 30. For that age waiver on a joint account, every holder must be under 30. Qualifying CommBank Yello tiers and other specified relationships can also waive it.

CommBank ATM withdrawals are free. International card purchases attract a 3.5% charge, including Australian-dollar purchases from an overseas merchant. Most overseas cash withdrawals cost A$5 plus 3.5%; ASB New Zealand and overseas CommBank ATMs have a different A$2 fee.

Streamline Basic has no monthly, overdraw or dishonour fee. It is for eligible concession-card holders or qualifying government-benefit recipients, with government benefit payments paid into a CommBank account. It does not provide an overdraft or new cheque book.

Opening and digital access

Smart Access online applicants need an Australian residential address, identification and tax-residency details. The individual account starts at age 14; joint applicants must both be at least 18. Adults use a driver licence or passport for the online identity check. Streamline Basic applications go through a branch, or by phone for existing customers.

The app requires NetBank access and NetCode SMS verification. Existing customers can open another Smart Access account from NetBank.
