What it does

Commercial Type sells retail typefaces and custom type design, with an on-site tester for typography and language features. Font licences use a one-time fee for perpetual usage. An account is required to order and provides later downloads and licence upgrades.

Commercial Type’s tester has Font Size, Line Height and Letter Spacing controls, plus alignment and one-, two- or three-column views. OpenType and Languages expose further options for the chosen typeface.

At purchase, select the licence uses and create an account. Desktop coverage delivers OpenType files for making printed work and images. Web coverage supplies WOFF and WOFF2 files; application use supplies TrueType files. The purchased licence determines the permitted use, even when several formats are available.

Sharing files with another company, embedding them in editable documents or supplying them through a third-party platform needs the relevant extension. A freelancer working for a licensed client can use the fonts for that project, but needs separate coverage for unrelated work.

Strengths

  • Provides several on-site typography test controls.
  • Separates creation, distribution and extension licensing.

Watch out for

  • File sharing and embedded distribution require suitable coverage.

Best for

  • Studios evaluating retail fonts in realistic layouts.
  • Brands preparing a custom type project.
