What it does
Wikimedia Commons is a volunteer-maintained collection of public-domain and freely licensed media. Its images, sound recordings and video clips can be reused outside Wikipedia, subject to each file’s terms.
Open the file description page before downloading. It identifies the creator, source and licence, and links to the full-resolution file. Use that link to save the original rather than a smaller preview. No account is needed to obtain media; uploading your own files requires one.
Credit the creator named in the description, who may be different from the uploader. A file offered under several licences lets you choose one. Some licences require attribution and a link to their terms; ShareAlike can also affect how an adaptation is released.
Commons provides reuse tools for generating credit lines, but it does not guarantee every uploader’s rights information. Public-domain status also does not settle separate privacy or trademark issues.
Strengths
- Media can be reused in projects outside the Wikimedia sites.
- File descriptions keep the creator, source and licence together.
Watch out for
- Licence conditions and the reliability of supplied rights information vary between files.
Best for
- Editors sourcing educational and historical media
- Designers able to include image credits and licence details
