What it does
CoType Foundry publishes type systems such as Aeonik, RM and Lock, with trial fonts and examples in use. Its catalog also includes Gridular and Betatron, free display fonts supplied in desktop and web formats.
CoType groups related families by role: Aeonik includes soft, condensed, extended and mono designs, while Lock pairs sans, serif and stencil forms. The Trial Fonts form lets you choose a family or the whole collection. Trials include Light, Regular and Bold with reduced Latin characters and basic punctuation, so they are useful for layout decisions but cannot demonstrate every production weight or accent.
Gridular and Betatron are separate free fonts rather than restricted trials. Both come in OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 and allow personal and commercial use under Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0. Gridular has a useful variation: switch on Stylistic Set 1 and turn off kerning for a fully monospaced effect. Its default design uses some proportional characters. Betatron uses angular, grid-based forms for a more sharply drawn display face.
