What it does
Counter provides aggregated website statistics including daily unique visitors, referrals and geographical information. Its hosted service is free with optional support, and the project also publishes its source code.
Counter provides a deliberately compact view of website activity. Its main measures include daily unique visitors, referring websites and geographical information. The hosted service is free, with optional financial support, and its code is available under AGPL version 3.
Create a username and password to get the tracking code; an email address is optional. Providing email also enables the normal account-recovery route. Install the supplied code on the site whose traffic you want to measure, then use the daily figures and referrals to understand changes in arrivals.
Keep daily unique-visit counts distinct from a count of different people across a whole month. Someone returning on several days can contribute to several daily totals. The project describes its data as aggregated and says it cannot connect individual pageviews to a user identity, so Counter suits a traffic overview better than an identified customer's detailed history.
The project also publishes a self-hosting route for technical users. For most small websites, the hosted account avoids the work of operating that infrastructure while retaining the service's narrow reporting focus.
Strengths
- Offers ongoing hosted analytics without a required subscription.
- Uses aggregate reporting without linking pageviews to an identified user.
Watch out for
- Daily unique-visit totals do not identify distinct people across a longer period.
Best for
- Small websites wanting a compact overview of daily visitors and referrals
