What it does
Central Pacific Bank's Shaka account uses digital banking for balances, bills, statements and mobile deposits. It has no monthly maintenance fee with online statements, a US$25 opening deposit and extra charges for paper or branch transactions. Online account opening is for eligible adult Hawaii residents.
Shaka's paperless setup
Shaka costs US$0 a month with online statements, otherwise US$5 a month. Branch deposits and withdrawals cost US$2 per transaction, and physical cheques are unavailable. Account questions can be handled through online chat, messages or CPB's service center.
CPB's online opening process requires an applicant to be 18 or older, a current Hawaii resident, and a US citizen or green-card holder. Have your Social Security number, driver's licence or state ID number and email ready. An electronic opening deposit also needs the existing account and routing numbers.
Deposit a cheque and find statements
In the CPB app, select Deposit → Start Deposit, choose the account and enter the amount. Photograph both sides of the cheque against a dark background, then select Submit. The limits are US$10,000 per cheque, US$10,000 per day and US$30,000 per month.
For statements, select View Statements on the app dashboard, then View Statement for the current one or View History for previous statements. Browser users find these under Accounts → Statements.
Shaka refunds up to US$20 in outside-ATM surcharges per monthly billing cycle. Existing CPB customers need a separate new Shaka account: their current checking account cannot be converted into it.
