What it does

Curvy 3D is a Windows modeller and sculpting application built around drawn curves, with a free 30-day demo. It also inflates images, merges shapes, subdivides meshes while sculpting and paints surface maps before OBJ export.

A drawn profile becomes a rounded form, and extra curves refine its shape. Soft Move drags curves or meshes; Voxel Merge and Weld join separate shapes into a continuous surface. Boolean And and Subtract provide cutting operations.

For surface changes, Warp brushes include Inflate, Deflate, Pinch, Smooth and Flatten. Adaptive subdivision adds geometry where sculpting needs it, while mesh simplification can reduce it again. Colour, specular and bump maps can be painted in the 3D view or directly on their textures using the supplied 2D texture layout.

Image Inflate takes a silhouette or greyscale picture and offers Heightmap, Bubble, Bevel and Extrude styles. This gives graphic shapes another route into the model alongside hand-drawn profiles. Exported OBJ meshes and separate textures can continue into another application for animation or rendering; TGA screenshots can retain alpha for compositing.

A free 30-day Windows demo provides time to try these modelling methods. The combination is useful for organic base meshes and rounded forms built from drawings.

Strengths

  • Drawn curves, imported SVG curves and image inflation offer several starting points.
  • Local subdivision and mesh simplification address geometry at different stages.
  • Meshes, textures and alpha screenshots support different handoffs.

Watch out for

  • The application is documented for Windows.
  • The free demo lasts 30 days.

Best for

  • Organic base meshes shaped from drawn profiles
  • Inflating graphic silhouettes into editable 3D forms
