What it does

Customer.io combines customer data, audience segments and automated messaging journeys. Its tools include a visual workflow builder, reusable message components, transactional email and campaigns triggered by changes to people or related business objects.

A Customer.io journey can start from a change to an object or a relationship, not just an individual's profile. An education service, for example, can model classes and their participants and send a relevant update when the class changes. The message can use information from the object that triggered the journey.

The distinction between the trigger person and the recipient matters. A person joining an account could trigger a notice to that account's administrators; the person who caused the event is not necessarily the person receiving the email.

Essentials includes 5,000 profiles, counted as people plus objects, and two object types. A data model with several business entities therefore affects the package choice even before email volume grows. The platform also supplies reusable components and versioned templates for keeping those related messages consistent.
