What it does
Cypherock X1 stores a crypto wallet as five separate key shares across its Vault and four Cards. Ordinary signing uses the Vault and one Card, while the desktop cySync app manages accounts. The hardware is purchased; optional Cover recovery services have separate subscriptions.
Cypherock X1 replaces a single stored recovery phrase with a two-of-five sharing arrangement. The parts are one Vault and four Cards. A normal transaction needs the Vault and a Card; recovering after a lost Vault requires a replacement Vault and two surviving Cards. Keep that difference in mind when deciding where each part will be stored.
To generate a wallet, connect the Vault to the computer and choose Create Wallet, then Generate New Wallet on the device. Name it, choose whether to add a PIN, and tap all four Cards as prompted. Finish by synchronizing with cySync. Email notifications for product-authenticity checks are optional; the ordinary creation flow uses local wallet credentials.
The X1 can hold up to four separate wallets. All four Cards are needed when adding another wallet, even though fewer parts suffice for ordinary signing. An existing 12-, 18- or 24-word compatible phrase can also be imported. If you need the phrase later, the Vault and one Card can display it, together with the PIN if one was set.
The hardware purchase is separate from transaction costs and from Cypherock Cover. Cover's paid services add PIN recovery and inheritance arrangements; they should be set up according to their own conditions before a recovery need arises. Do not assume that the ordinary device setup lets support reset a forgotten PIN.
Use the desktop cySync instructions for Windows, macOS or Linux. Storing enough usable parts and the required PIN remains your responsibility. The wallet can authorize a transaction, but it cannot undo a payment sent to the wrong address.
Strengths
- Recovery can survive the loss of the original Vault when two Cards remain
- The recovery phrase can be displayed without connecting the Vault to cySync
Watch out for
- All four Cards are required to add a new wallet
- A forgotten PIN has different recovery requirements from a lost hardware component
Best for
- People who want to distribute wallet-recovery material among several locations
- Owners maintaining separate wallets on one hardware kit
