What it does

Dalton Maag offers retail typefaces, custom font design and modifications to its existing families. Its library includes static OpenType and variable fonts, with separate desktop, web and embedding licences. Registered users can download full-featured trial fonts for evaluation and pitches; production use needs the appropriate paid licence.

Dalton Maag’s retail licences are organised around what happens to the font files. Install & Use covers desktop work and is priced per user. Host & Link covers self-hosted websites and ads, measured by monthly page impressions. Embed & Distribute covers products such as apps, ebooks and games, measured by lifetime distribution units. The Unlimited Perpetual option combines broader rights.

These library licences are paid once. The separate FontPass subscription is aimed at agencies and organisations that need access across the library.

Trial downloads include full static and variable fonts. Register, accept the Trial Licence Agreement and download a family from Your Downloads. Up to five people may use trial files for academic, speculative or pitching work. Trial output may be shown to a client for evaluation, but it cannot be sold, published or distributed. For production, choose the family, styles and required licences in the online shop.

Strengths

  • Offers retail, modification and custom-design routes.
  • Publishes separate licensing metrics for common uses.

Watch out for

  • Trial fonts cannot be used for published or distributed production work.
  • Desktop, web and embedded products use different licensing measures.

Best for

  • Brands evaluating a long-term type family.
  • Projects needing custom type modifications.
