What it does
The BIS Data Portal brings together international banking, liquidity, derivatives, property-price and other financial statistics. Analysts can compare series and export data freely, subject to BIS reuse terms. Spreadsheet downloads, full-dataset archives and a software interface support different working methods.
The choice between locational and consolidated banking statistics changes the question you can answer. Locational data follow the banking office's residence and include positions within banking groups. Consolidated data follow the parent banking group's headquarters and remove those internal positions.
For a concrete example, Table A5 shows lending and borrowing by banks located in a selected reporting country. Choose Australia and inspect Claims to examine lending by banks located there, regardless of where their parent groups are based. The locational banking series are released quarterly, with revisions incorporated in scheduled releases.
To take a selection away, tick the series and use Export for Excel or CSV. A selection can contain up to 4,500 time series. For a complete topic, use Bulk downloads for a ZIP containing CSV or the statistical SDMX format. Export also provides code snippets for retrieving the selected data in Python, R or MATLAB.
The public downloads do not require an account. BIS allows free export under its terms, which require attribution and prohibit adding a separate charge for BIS statistics included in a commercial product. Share preserves the filters and table settings in a link, useful for giving a colleague the same comparison.
Strengths
- Distinguishes banking-office location from consolidated banking-group exposure
- Exports selected series or complete datasets in common data formats
- Shared links preserve table filters and settings
Watch out for
- Selected-series exports are limited to 4,500 series at a time
- Banking statistics are quarterly and can be revised in later releases
Best for
- Macro analysts examining cross-border banking and liquidity
- Researchers moving BIS statistics into spreadsheets or analytical code
