What it does
The World Bank Indicators API exposes country and development statistics as queryable time series. A client combines an economy code, an indicator code, and optional date and format parameters to retrieve results in JSON, XML, JSONP, or JSON-stat. It is useful for data visualizations and comparisons, but the meaning, coverage, and reuse terms of an individual indicator still depend on its metadata.
Pick the series before writing the request
First find the indicator and country or aggregate that match the question. The API documentation uses population as an example and shows a country-and-indicator path such as country/all/indicator/SP.POP.TOTL, with a date range added when a chart needs a bounded period. Query parameters can return JSON or other supported formats, and the response is paginated, so a client should read the pagination metadata rather than assume every observation arrives at once.
For example, a documented request for one year of population data can be shaped like this:
https://api.worldbank.org/v2/country/all/indicator/SP.POP.TOTL?date=2000&format=json
This is an illustration from the API's documented query pattern, not a request made during research. The same structure works for multiple economies and indicator series; the hardest step is usually choosing the right series and understanding its units, missing years, and coverage.
Reuse requires checking the data behind the endpoint
The Indicators API is programmatic access to World Bank data, not a general-purpose database or a guarantee that every series has annual values for every economy. The World Bank says its data can generally be reused at no cost under CC BY 4.0 with attribution, but some indicators have third-party restrictions or additional terms. Check the indicator metadata before redistributing or combining a series.
The help desk recommends client-side caching and graceful handling of outages because API uptime is not guaranteed. The reviewed documentation did not publish a general request-rate quota. Use the current v2 API path; the older v1 interface has been retired.
Strengths
- Provides programmatic access to a broad catalog of development indicators and country-level time series.
- Supports date filters, multiple response formats, and pagination for data integration.
- API keys and other authentication are not required for access.
Watch out for
- Indicator coverage, observation dates, and reuse terms vary, so each series needs a metadata check.
- The service does not guarantee 100 percent uptime; applications should cache results and handle outages.
- Older v1 requests are retired, so integrations must use the current v2 endpoint structure.
Best for
- Country comparisons using development, economic, social, or environmental indicators.
- Charts and dashboards that need historical World Bank time-series data.
- Research workflows that repeatedly request indicator data and can cache responses to reduce repeated API calls.
