What it does

DBeaver Community is a desktop database management tool rather than a database server. It connects to relational databases through selected drivers, then lets a user inspect database objects, run SQL, and edit data. Its value is having a shared interface for several supported relational systems, which is useful when a developer or analyst works across local and remote databases. You supply the database endpoint and credentials; DBeaver does not host the data.

Start with a connection, not a database install

DBeaver's connection wizard saves the driver, host, port, database name, authentication settings, and optional network configuration for a data source. Choose the matching database type, fill in the connection details provided by the database owner, and connect. If the driver is not already available, follow the product's driver setup flow before diagnosing a network or credential problem.

After connecting, use the object tree to locate a schema and table, then open the SQL editor for a read query or a data view for inspection. For example, a developer comparing a local SQLite file with a staging PostgreSQL database can keep separate saved connections and inspect the same table names without confusing the two endpoints.

DBeaver is a client, so access rights and the consequences of edits come from the database account and server. A read-only account is a sensible choice for exploration. The Community edition is free and open source; its official license is Apache License 2.0. DBeaver also sells separate commercial products with additional database and cloud integrations. The Community download supports Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Strengths

  • One desktop tool provides SQL editing, object browsing, and data editing for supported relational databases.
  • The connection wizard records driver, endpoint, authentication, and optional network settings.
  • The Community edition is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Watch out for

  • You must already have access to a running database and its connection details; DBeaver does not host or provision one.
  • The Community edition is not the same product bundle as DBeaver's separately sold commercial editions.

Best for

  • Inspecting and querying databases from a desktop application
  • Developers who work with more than one supported relational database
  • Local data exploration where the user can provide a database connection
