What it does

TerreSculptor is a Windows terrain editor for procedural heightmaps, real-world elevation data and material masks. Its current paid line provides a Terrain Stack, erosion, topology editing and map export.

Choose a noise or shape generator, or import elevation data, to establish the heightmap. Modifiers can act immediately on the terrain or become editable Terrain Stack items. Each item can carry masks, and groups control how sections of the stack are built. Erosion can also produce flow and sediment maps for surface materials.

Height and material coverage are separate outputs. Composite Weightmap combines up to three masks, such as slope and altitude, and the Splatmap or Layer creators arrange them for a receiving material system. Mapper and Topography Explorer bring elevation and map imagery into the editor; the terrain and its supporting maps can then be exported for other tools.

TerreSculptor 4.8 is offered at CAD 99 per seat in an Autumn sale, with a listed regular price of CAD 139. The perpetual licence includes free build updates. The current store permits personal, commercial and academic use. It specifies Windows 10 or 11 or later, .NET 8 and OpenGL 3.0. Without a key, the application runs in repeatable ten-minute demo sessions.

The older 2.0 download remains free for personal, commercial and academic work, but development and support have ended. It lacks the Terrain Stack, non-destructive editing and the newer GIS and topology tools, so its workflow differs substantially from the current line.

Strengths

  • Terrain Stack operations and masks can be revised and rebuilt.
  • Weightmaps and splatmaps can be prepared alongside the terrain heightmap.
  • Built-in explorers retrieve elevation and map data.

Watch out for

  • The current unlicensed demo runs in ten-minute sessions.
  • The free legacy edition lacks the Terrain Stack and is discontinued.
  • The current application requires a Windows environment.

Best for

  • Game terrain with revisable generation and erosion steps
  • Preparing heightmaps and material-distribution maps together
