What it does

GOV.UK Design System provides styles, coded components and task patterns for government services. Its examples cover common forms, navigation and validation, with separate setup paths for prototypes and production. The public guidance is available under Open Government Licence v3.0, and GOV.UK Frontend code uses MIT.

A service that asks for information needs more than a text field. GOV.UK’s patterns cover names, addresses and dates, plus journeys such as checking answers or recovering from validation errors. Components have examples with HTML and Nunjucks code tabs.

For a live service, open Get started → Production and choose an installation route. Installing GOV.UK Frontend through npm lets you include individual components, customize the build and use Nunjucks templates, which generate HTML from component options. Downloading the compiled files includes the full CSS and JavaScript but does not provide those build options or templates.

The MIT code licence allows commercial reuse with its copyright and permission notices retained. The site’s written content uses the Open Government Licence except where stated otherwise. The separate Prototyping route is intended for trying a service flow before building the production implementation.

Strengths

  • Task patterns cover common information requests and validation journeys
  • Examples provide both HTML and Nunjucks versions
  • The npm route supports selective component imports

Watch out for

  • Compiled-file installation excludes per-component imports and Nunjucks templates

Best for

  • Teams designing transactional public services
