What it does

Det Fælles Designsystem is Denmark’s shared design system for borger.dk and Virk self-service interfaces. It provides themes, components, form patterns and implementation guidance in Danish. The code is free and open source, with separate licences for some bundled assets.

The Danish system offers Borger.dk tema and Virk tema, with theme switching in the site footer. Components include date fields, error summaries, file uploads and step indicators. Patterns address practical service situations such as telephone entry, fetched data and session expiry.

To use the code, open Hent kodepakken. Install the dkfds npm package or download the ZIP from GitHub, then include the stylesheet for the selected theme. Add the JavaScript and call DKFDS.init() once when the page is ready. For components added later, use their individual initialization function instead of running the full-page initializer again.

Most of the project uses MIT; bundled icons and fonts have their own listed licences. Separate links explain connecting a service to borger.dk or Virk. Those platform integration steps are unnecessary when using the system for another kind of site.

Strengths

  • Separate stylesheets provide borger.dk and Virk themes
  • Patterns include form and session-expiry scenarios
  • The code is available through npm or a ZIP download

Watch out for

  • The main guidance is in Danish
  • Running the same initialization twice on a component is explicitly discouraged
  • Some bundled assets have separate licence conditions

Best for

  • Teams designing Danish public self-service products
