What it does
GIPHY API gives applications access to GIF and sticker content through endpoints for search, trending, translation, random selections, categories and related actions. Requests use a developer API key and return content metadata and media renditions for the client to display. The API also provides an Action Register endpoint for recording when users view, click or send content. It suits applications that want an in-product GIF or sticker experience rather than a generic client for calling unrelated APIs.
Start with the core experience
Create a developer account and API key, then use the Search endpoint for a user-entered term and Trending to populate a default feed. The quickstart says requests must be URL encoded. Translate can map a phrase to a recommended GIF or sticker, while the API documentation lists separate GIF and sticker endpoints and content-rating options.
If the app records user actions, GIPHY recommends calling Action Register when a person views, clicks or sends a result so its analytics can improve later responses. The documentation also requires a conspicuous “Powered By GIPHY” mark where the API is used.
Limits before launch
New API keys start as beta keys limited to 100 searches or API calls per hour. A production key requires an upgrade application in the developer dashboard; GIPHY reviews it and contacts qualifying applicants to discuss pricing. The docs also call out client-side use for Trending and recommend separate keys for each platform and app section. Check those requirements against the product's architecture before building a proxy around the API.
Strengths
- The API covers several useful GIF and sticker flows, including search, trending, phrase translation, random selection and categories.
- An Action Register endpoint can report views, clicks and sends for GIPHY's documented analytics workflow.
- The docs describe platform-specific keys and content-rating parameters for tailoring an integration.
Watch out for
- Beta keys are limited to 100 API calls per hour; production access requires an application and is subject to GIPHY review.
- Apps must display GIPHY attribution where the API is used, and the docs require Trending calls to come from the client side.
- Production pricing is discussed with qualifying applicants rather than published as a standard public rate.
Best for
- Adding GIF and sticker search to messaging, social or community apps
- Showing a trending media feed or translating a short phrase into a GIF suggestion
- Apps that can follow GIPHY's attribution, API-key and client-side integration requirements
