What it does
DiceBear generates SVG profile illustrations from a chosen style, text seed and visual options. It offers a browser editor, software libraries and a hosted HTTP API.
Within a selected style, a stable text seed selects a repeatable avatar. A user ID can supply that seed for a profile picture. The editor suits individual images; libraries let an application generate them locally.
Control the image and its delivery
Core options include rotation, scale, background colours and corner rounding. Individual styles add their own controls, such as hair or facial details. The hosted API accepts these through the image URL without authentication. Its raster outputs are limited to 256 × 256 pixels, while SVG remains scalable.
The public API is free for non-commercial use; commercial integrations are directed to self-hosting. Software uses the MIT licence, but avatar artwork follows each artist’s terms. A CC BY style needs credit and a licence link, whereas CC0 styles have different obligations.
Strengths
- A text seed connects a profile with its chosen avatar style
- Style controls allow a shared visual system with individual variation
Watch out for
- Commercial use of the API requires your own hosted instance
- The public API does not support every core option
Best for
- Default profile pictures in apps and websites
