What it does
New York Public Library’s Digital Collections contains digitised photographs, maps, posters, manuscripts and illustrated books. Descriptive records place individual images within the Library’s historical collections.
A useful image may be one capture within a larger item. Rights statements apply at that capture level, so the permission for one view should not be assumed to cover every page or image in the record.
NYPL’s documentation distinguishes no known US copyright restrictions, CC0, copyright held or managed by the Library, and undetermined status. The latter two may require a permissions enquiry. For unrestricted material, credit is optional but appreciated; NYPL recommends its name and a link back to the item. That link also preserves the title, creator and other descriptive context.
Strengths
- The collection spans maps, photographs, posters and illustrated publications.
- Documented rights statements distinguish unrestricted and permission-dependent material.
Watch out for
- Undetermined rights status does not establish permission to reproduce an image.
Best for
- Editors researching historical and cultural imagery
