What it does
DisplayCAL uses ArgyllCMS and supported measurement hardware for display calibration, ICC profiling and verification. Its GPL-licensed application also creates video 3D LUTs.
Connect the instrument, detect the display and measurement device, then select a correction suitable for the display technology. Calibrate & profile starts the measured workflow. Windows instruments may need an Argyll-specific driver.
Slower calibration takes more readings and refinement passes. Accuracy still depends on the instrument, display repeatability and graphics output. Verification reports assess the resulting profile or display.
The original site supplies Windows, Mac and Linux builds but still lists its 2019 release. Check compatibility with the actual instrument and operating system before adopting that build.
Strengths
- Calibration, profiling and verification share a documented workflow.
- Supports multiple displays and video LUT creation.
Watch out for
- Measurement requires supported hardware and ArgyllCMS.
- The original release is old.
Best for
- Users measuring and managing display colour
