What it does
Honeycomb is an observability platform for exploring application telemetry. Its trace quickstart asks the developer to create an account and API key, instrument an application, send telemetry, and inspect an example trace. This is useful for diagnosing a request path or finding patterns in event data after the service has emitted it.
The trace walkthrough needs access to application source code and a development environment where the service can run. Create a Honeycomb account, choose a data region, generate an API key, and use the guide’s OpenTelemetry path to send a trace. Once data arrives, inspect an example trace and use the interface to explore the events that make up the request.
Honeycomb helps investigate behavior from telemetry; it does not automatically fix a slow service or replace the instrumentation that produces the data. Its pricing page lists a Free plan with event and metric allowances, plus paid plans for larger volumes and team features. Choose based on expected ingest and retention rather than assuming a trace is free simply because the account can be created at no cost.
Strengths
- The official trace guide describes account, API-key, instrumentation, and trace-exploration steps.
- Honeycomb supports OpenTelemetry data from applications.
- The pricing page lists a Free plan and paid plans.
Watch out for
- The application must be instrumented and runnable before its traces appear.
- Event and metric allowances constrain the free tier.
Best for
- Investigating request traces from an instrumented application
- Exploring telemetry patterns across application events
