What it does
Hydration combines several trading pool designs on a Polkadot based blockchain. Its swap interface supports instant exchanges, split trades and scheduled purchases, while the Omnipool accepts liquidity in a single asset.
Hydration offers different pool structures for different pairs. The Omnipool combines assets in one trading system and accepts single asset liquidity deposits. Stablepools serve closely related assets, while isolated pools keep a pair in its own market. Lending and the HOLLAR stablecoin are additional products; the Trade screen is the starting point for a spot exchange.
Before swapping DOT or another asset from outside Hydration, transfer it onto the Hydration chain using a supported route. In Trade, select Connect wallet, choose a Polkadot wallet and select the account. Enter either the amount to spend or the amount to receive. Settings controls slippage. The default instant route uses Swap followed by a wallet signature.
For trades with estimated price impact above 0.15%, the guide describes a Split trade option that spreads execution across smaller trades over less than three hours. Select that option and use Place trades to authorise the schedule. It changes when the order executes, so compare it with an instant swap rather than treating the two buttons as equivalent.
Regular purchases use the separate dollar-cost averaging page, labelled DCA. Choose the paying asset, amount per trade, total amount, interval and receiving asset, then select Schedule DCA trades and sign. Advanced Settings accepts intervals measured in blocks. Expand an item under DCA Orders to inspect it; Terminate cancels its remaining amount. Spreading purchases over time still leaves the acquired assets exposed to price falls.
The fee schedule distinguishes Omnipool asset fees of 0.25% to 5% from protocol fees of 0.05% to 0.10%. Both are dynamic. Isolated pool trades are listed at 0.3%, while the Stablepool overview lists 0.04%; check the selected pool because its rate is set individually. Network transaction fees also apply. Polkadot accounts can pay those fees in an Omnipool asset, with the first received asset selected automatically. MetaMask accounts using a 0x address currently need the wrapped Ether asset labelled WETH (MRL) for this purpose.
Hydration describes the protocol as permissionless. Its practical access requirement for these trades is a compatible wallet with assets on the correct chain, while any particular frontend's terms remain relevant to using that interface.
Strengths
- Offers distinct pool models and single asset Omnipool deposits
- Scheduled orders expose per-trade amounts, intervals and a Terminate control
Watch out for
- Assets on another chain must first reach Hydration through a supported transfer route
- Dynamic pool charges and network charges both affect the final cost
Best for
- Polkadot wallet users arranging token exchanges
- Users planning split trades or a finite schedule of recurring purchases
