What it does
Renovate scans configured repositories for dependency manifests, proposes updates, and opens pull requests that developers can review and merge. Teams can use a hosted Renovate app or run the open-source CLI, Docker image, or CI integration themselves. Configuration controls which dependencies are grouped, when updates are proposed, and how onboarding begins, so Renovate handles dependency maintenance rather than building or deploying the application.
Start with an onboarding pull request
After enabling Renovate for a repository, the documented onboarding flow creates a Configure Renovate pull request. That reviewable change proposes the repository configuration; the docs say Renovate does not make further repository changes or open update PRs until the onboarding PR is merged. This gives a team a chance to inspect and adjust the starting configuration before automation begins. Renovate can discover repositories automatically or operate on a fixed configured list, depending on how an administrator sets it up.
For a self-hosted run, the open-source CLI is distributed as an npm package and can process configured repositories in a Node.js environment before exiting. The operator supplies the runtime, credentials for the supported Git platform, global configuration, and a regular schedule. Renovate's docs also warn that self-hosting makes you responsible for infrastructure and keeping Renovate itself updated.
Tune update noise and runtime needs
Repository configuration can control update schedules and package rules, which lets a team group related upgrades or reduce pull-request churn. Renovate detects supported package files, including in monorepos, but the CLI does not bundle every language's package manager: the documentation says operators may need to install tools such as Ruby, Python, Composer, or Poetry for the managers they use. That matters when lockfile regeneration must reproduce local CI behavior.
This listing is for the upstream Renovate open-source project. Mend also offers hosted and commercial Renovate distributions; their pricing and commercial terms are not inferred from the upstream project's AGPL license.
Strengths
- The onboarding pull request lets maintainers review initial configuration before update pull requests begin.
- Configuration supports schedules and package rules to group or control updates.
- The project supports several repository platforms and can run as a CLI, container image, or CI integration.
Watch out for
- Self-hosting requires an operator to provide infrastructure, credentials, global configuration, regular execution, and Renovate updates.
- The CLI may need external language or package-manager tools installed to update lockfiles for those ecosystems.
Best for
- Keeping dependencies and lockfiles current across multiple repositories.
- Reviewing automated upgrade proposals through pull requests rather than applying updates silently.
- Scheduling and grouping dependency maintenance in a self-hosted CI or automation environment.
