What it does
DOFMaster calculates photographic depth-of-field limits and hyperfocal distance from camera, lens, aperture and subject-distance inputs.
DOFMaster selects a camera/format or circle of confusion, actual focal length in mm, f-stop and subject distance in feet, inches, metres or cm. It reports near/far limits, total depth, front/behind portions and hyperfocal distance. Use actual focal length rather than a 35 mm-equivalent value, with the circle of confusion appropriate to the camera. The FAQ explains that this sharpness threshold is subjective and the results are estimates. Its equations derive from a thin-lens model, making the subject-distance reference particularly relevant in close-up/macro work; a multi-element lens's physical front is not a universal reference plane. Preserve the chosen sharpness criterion and distance basis when comparing apertures or focus settings.
Strengths
- Near, far and hyperfocal-distance outputs
- Camera or circle-of-confusion selection
Watch out for
- Input requires actual lens focal length
Best for
- Comparing photographic depth-of-field scenarios
