What it does
DPLA brings together digitised images and other cultural material from US libraries, archives and museums. Topic and partner browsing sit alongside exhibitions, primary-source sets and copyright-status filters.
The copyright filter separates material available for reuse from items with conditions, permission requirements or unspecified status. Choose a category that fits the intended use, then read the individual record’s Rights field. A restriction on modifications matters if the design calls for an altered image.
The contributing institution remains the place to obtain the file and resolve additional permissions. Keep its item link with the DPLA result so the image, description and rights statement stay connected as the project develops.
Strengths
- Copyright-status filters help narrow a reuse search.
- Topic and partner browsing connect related cultural collections.
Watch out for
- The contributing institution controls file availability and additional permissions.
Best for
- Editors finding historical images across US institutions
