What it does

DSType is an independent type foundry with retail fonts, custom projects and trial access. Its support material distinguishes print, web, broadcasting and app or mobile use.

DSType’s trial selector includes families organized by purpose, such as Ensaio Text, Cover and Caption, and Agna Text, Headline, Subhead, Display and Poster. Select the faces you want to try, enter an email address and accept the Test Font Licence. The trials work for mockups but omit OpenType features and some characters, so they cannot confirm every detail of the retail fonts.

The licence choice changes with the output. A base desktop licence covers up to five computers. The web licence supplies WOFF and WOFF2 files and permits perpetual use on one domain within its monthly pageview allowance. App licences are annual, cover one app and impose a registered-user limit where registration is required. They do not permit users to edit the embedded font or use it to create their own font-embedded documents.

Strengths

  • Lets you select trial families for print, web or app mockups.
  • Offers separate text, caption and display designs within several families.

Watch out for

  • Trial files omit OpenType features and some characters.
  • App licences are annual and restrict editable uses and registered-user counts.

Best for

  • Teams planning font use in an application.
  • Designers evaluating a retail direction before production.
