What it does

ECAL Typefaces publishes fonts developed by students at the Lausanne art and design school. The catalog includes text and display families, with free school-project licences for registered students and paid licences for other use.

Maskots exposes Size and Weight controls, alternate a, g and r forms, and several circled or squared numeral sets. Mule adds small capitals and oldstyle figures, while Parabole has separate Text and Display branches. Open a family’s Preview and Character set to inspect those choices alongside its design story. Trial files leave out stylistic sets, so use the full specimen when comparing alternates.

The Student License covers school-related projects while you are enrolled and ends at graduation. It does not cover paid client work undertaken during your studies. This permission is separate from the ordinary trial files, which cannot be used for noncommercial finished work.

For a paid order, create an account and enter the billing address and the licence holder separately. Files become available in the account after payment, and updates can be downloaded there at no extra charge. Desktop use is limited to print and protected PDFs. The broader Web licence uses a one-off payment for lifelong rights covering registered websites, mobile apps, ebooks and broadcasting, subject to its computer and hosting conditions. Webfonts come as WOFF and WOFF2; desktop files are OTF. Third-party font hosting is prohibited, and a trademarked logotype requires advance permission.

Strengths

  • Provides separate character and feature controls in family specimens.
  • Registered students can use the fonts in school projects without payment.
  • Makes purchased files and free updates available through the account.

Watch out for

  • The student licence excludes commercial work and ends at graduation.
  • Desktop rights are restricted to print and protected PDFs.
  • Third-party font hosting and unapproved trademarked logotypes are not covered.

Best for

  • Student publications and class projects
  • Designers comparing emerging text and display families
