What it does

MagicaVoxel is a free GPU-based voxel-art editor for Windows and Mac. It combines block-based construction with an interactive path-tracing renderer.

MagicaVoxel builds pixel-like 3D objects from coloured voxels and previews them with an interactive path-tracing renderer. It is a compact option for voxel props, illustrations and small scenes on Windows or macOS.

The model editor handles an individual object; Tab or a double-click on the background switches to the world editor for arranging objects. Palette-matched imports help keep imported parts consistent, and the pattern library supports reusing models within a project. Animation frames can be duplicated and assigned a render range to produce image sequences.

Several controls address common output problems. The renderer's Sparse geometry option and larger geometry buffers can resolve incomplete scenes; exported objects can use the Local option to change their centring. Rendering depends on a compatible GPU and driver. MagicaVoxel is free for any project, with optional credit, but its licence prohibits selling or redistributing the software itself as part of another package.

Strengths

  • World and model editors separate object creation from scene arrangement.
  • Palette matching and reusable patterns support consistent voxel assets.
  • Use in projects is free, with no required credit.

Watch out for

  • The renderer depends on GPU and driver compatibility.
  • Redistributing the application in another package is prohibited.

Best for

  • Voxel props and illustrations
  • Small voxel scenes and rendered animation sequences
