What it does

Etcetera Type Co publishes Ty Finck’s open-source variable fonts, including Anybody, Epilogue, Imbue, Sono, Tourney and Trispace. Published fonts are free, with family pages linking to files and explaining their variable axes.

Sono’s Mono axis moves between fixed-width and proportional spacing, while Weight changes the stroke weight. Its Playground also exposes Size, Leading and Tracking, so you can compare a technical label and a sentence using the same letters. Static proportional styles are named Sono Sans; the monospaced styles keep the Sono name.

For files, the About section’s “available on Github” link leads to the author’s public Sono repository. Its fonts folder separates OTF, TTF, variable and webfont packages. The variable folder contains a TrueType file with Mono and Weight axes, while the OTF folder provides separate Sono and Sono Sans styles. These public files can be accessed without an account.

Sono uses the SIL Open Font License 1.1, permitting use, embedding, modification and redistribution under its terms. Include the licence and copyright notice when redistributing the fonts, and do not sell the font files on their own. Documents created with them do not have to adopt the font licence. Elsewhere in the catalog, Imbue varies optical size, and Anybody and Tourney offer width controls. The separately linked Public Type Works projects are works in progress, so their individual release terms matter.

Strengths

  • Explains the distinct axes available in each published family.
  • Sono offers both static styles and a variable font.
  • Public font files and an open licence support use and modification without payment.

Watch out for

  • Redistributed Sono files must retain the OFL terms and notices.
  • The font files cannot be sold on their own.

Best for

  • Designers exploring variable spacing and width
  • Projects seeking published open-source typography
