What it does

European Film Gateway brings together films, photographs, posters and related documents from European archives. Its themed collections include the First World War and reconstruction after the Second World War.

Search a film’s original title when possible, then filter by archive, period, object type or language. Titles and descriptions retain the provider’s language, so “house” and “casa” can return different results.

Each entry names a Provider. Contact that archive for a higher-quality copy, reproduction permission or information beyond the catalogue record. The portal’s streamed videos are for personal, non-commercial viewing and cannot be downloaded or redistributed.

My EFG is an optional free workspace for saving, commenting on and tagging discoveries. The portal covers selected digitized holdings, so the contributing archive may have further material beyond what appears in the search.

Strengths

  • Archive, period, object-type and language filters narrow research.
  • Themed collections bring together war and reconstruction films.

Watch out for

  • Streamed videos cannot be downloaded through the portal.
  • Film-master supply and reuse permissions must be arranged with each archive.

Best for

  • Documentary researchers locating historical European films
  • Researchers finding film stills, posters and production documents
