What it does
Tree It is a Windows tree generator with editable trunks, branches and leaves. The publisher offers a free download, while a paid Steam edition includes sample tree packs. Model exports carry geometry and, in selected formats, data for procedural wind.
Trunks, branches, leaves and mesh components are added from the creation toolbar. Selecting a trunk exposes position, scale and rotation controls; individual joints can also be edited or broken. Branches can have their own textures, and render-to-image tools make leaf images. The publisher's release notes describe up to five levels of detail generated when exporting.
TRE files preserve editable trees. Model exports include DBO, FBX, OBJ and X, but FBX is written as ASCII, which some receiving applications cannot read. Wind information travels as vertex colours in DBO and FBX. A suitable procedural vertex shader uses that data; the export is not a universally playable animation.
The free-site FAQ permits selling original trees you make. The paid Steam edition adds sample packs with a separate boundary: their models may be used in commercial games or applications with the contents protected by the application's licence, but the supplied assets cannot be resold or redistributed as a model library. Editing those samples does not transfer ownership. Steam's software licence also requires retaining the export credit header or crediting Tree It where possible.
The desktop tool depends on legacy DirectX 9 and Visual C++ runtime packages. Steam's client requires Windows 10 or later, even though the application's older minimum list names earlier Windows releases.
Strengths
- Joint edits and separate component textures give control over tree structure.
- Several detail levels can be generated during export.
- The publisher provides a free desktop edition.
Watch out for
- ASCII FBX is unsupported by some receiving applications.
- Wind data needs a suitable shader in the destination workflow.
- Steam's supplied sample trees cannot be resold as source assets.
Best for
- Game artists making original tree assets on Windows
- Vegetation projects needing editable joints and lighter mesh variants
