What it does

Fathom combines financial analysis, management reports, cash-flow forecasting and consolidated reporting using accounting and operational data. Businesses and accounting firms can use a 14-day trial before choosing subscriptions for their connected companies.

Fathom is useful when the next task is explaining the accounts to a manager, client or board. Connect a supported accounting system, such as Xero, QuickBooks or MYOB, or import financial data through Excel or Google Sheets. For a Pro company, review Company Settings, the chart of accounts, budgets and performance measures before building reports.

In Analysis, Financials opens the financial statements. Choose a period, switch between summary and detailed rows, and compare against budget, last month or the same month last year. In the Report Editor, Tables and Financials adds statements to a report. Report Centre also provides Excel reports for a chosen period.

The forecast links profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow. Business Roadmap models individual decisions, such as a hire or equipment purchase, so you can compare their effect. Forecasts cover monthly, quarterly and annual periods, up to three years. Daily and weekly forecasting are outside its scope.

Match the company to the service

Service Intended use Billing basis
Portfolio Overview of many clients, trend checks and summary reports Number of connected companies
Pro Custom reports, detailed analysis, forecasts and consolidation Number of Pro companies
Enterprise Larger firms and groups with more than 50 companies Custom quote

Portfolio companies need a Pro upgrade for the advanced forecasting and reporting tools. Users are unlimited. The 14-day trial needs no billing information and includes a demo company, although its forecast has limited functionality. Paid subscriptions renew monthly; a company’s plan type determines how it is counted on the bill.

Strengths

  • Financial reports can compare actual results with budgets and earlier periods
  • Forecasts connect planned business decisions across three financial statements
  • Excel imports support accounting systems without a direct connection

Watch out for

  • Portfolio companies need a Pro upgrade for custom reports and forecasting

Best for

  • Businesses and advisers preparing management reports
