What it does

Finnhub supplies market and company data through an application programming interface (API). Its official Python client includes methods for price candles, quotes, company news, financial statements and earnings estimates. It suits developers who want to bring selected financial data into their own analysis or application.

Finnhub provides separate requests for different research questions. A quote request takes a stock symbol; a candle request also takes an interval and starting and ending timestamps. Company news uses a date range, while earnings estimates can be selected by reporting frequency. Keeping these inputs explicit makes a repeated analysis easier to compare.

The official Python package is installed as finnhub-python. Create its Client with your API key, then choose the relevant method. The examples show a candle response being converted to a pandas DataFrame, which is useful for calculations or a table in a notebook. Company profiles can be looked up using a ticker or a security identifier such as an ISIN or CUSIP.

For larger downloads, the stock-tick method exposes limit and skip parameters. The client also handles JSON and text responses, including CSV, according to the returned content type. Match the method to the data you need and check its access terms before designing a recurring import.
