What it does

Firefly III is a free, open-source personal finance manager for people comfortable running their own software. It combines double-entry transaction records, categories, tags, budget limits and reports, with a separate importer for bank-export files and supported data providers.

Firefly III’s rule engine can turn an abbreviated imported description into a useful record and apply consistent categories. That makes a batch of bank-export entries easier to review before it affects the budget reports.

Budgets, tags and categories are separate ways to organize activity. Budget limits can use several currencies, and reports can compare periods or show detailed account lists. The double-entry model records both sides of money moving between accounts, while recurring transactions handle repeated entries.

Software and imports

The application is free under the GNU Affero GPL version 3 license. Run it on your own server, including through Docker, or pay a hosting provider to run it. Hosting is a separate cost, and the owner is responsible for the installation.

The Firefly III Data Importer is another application to set up alongside the main one. It accepts CSV, CAMT.052 and CAMT.053 bank files. For connected imports, it uses third-party data providers rather than logging into the bank directly; some providers charge. Imports can run once for an existing history or repeatedly for new transactions.

A programming interface (API) covers much of the main application, and the importer offers automation through its own API or command line. This makes Firefly III useful when a personal transaction system needs custom import handling, provided someone is willing to maintain the supporting software.

Strengths

  • Rules support consistent cleanup of imported transactions.
  • Budget limits can use multiple currencies.
  • The separate importer accepts CSV and CAMT bank-export files.

Watch out for

  • The application and its separate data importer need installation and maintenance.
  • Connected imports depend on third-party providers, some of which charge.

Best for

  • People who want configurable personal records and import rules on their own server
