What it does
Flux is a set of continuous and progressive delivery tools for Kubernetes. It watches declared configuration in Git and reconciles cluster resources to that desired state; its bootstrap workflow can connect a GitHub repository to a cluster and install Flux controllers. The Flux project is an Apache-licensed CNCF graduated project.
Flux is a deployment controller rather than a build runner. A typical starting workflow bootstraps Flux against a repository and a cluster path, then keeps Kubernetes manifests in Git so the controllers can reconcile changes automatically. The official GitHub bootstrap guide documents both personal and organization repositories and explains GitHub token and deploy-key options.
Credential handling matters in that setup: token-authenticated bootstrap stores the GitHub personal access token in a Kubernetes Secret, while the guide also describes SSH deploy keys. The default GitHub deploy key is read-only; image automation needs write access. This GitOps approach makes desired-state changes reviewable in repository history, but it presumes a Kubernetes cluster and a team prepared to keep manifests and access controls aligned with the cluster.
Strengths
- The project describes automatic reconciliation of Kubernetes resources from declarative Git state.
- Bootstrap documentation covers GitHub and includes token-authentication and SSH deploy-key approaches.
- Flux is maintained as a CNCF graduated project and the official repository license is Apache 2.0.
Watch out for
- Flux targets Kubernetes delivery; it is not a general-purpose build and test runner.
- The GitHub bootstrap guide stores a token in a cluster Secret when token authentication is used, so credential scope and rotation need attention.
Best for
- Kubernetes teams that want deployments and configuration reconciled from Git as the source of desired state.
- Organizations that prefer pull-request-reviewed configuration and automated rollout over manual cluster changes.
