What it does
Font Bakery is an open-source command-line tool for checking font files and project metadata. It supplies named check profiles and supports custom Python checks. Foundries can run it locally or as part of an automated build, and the software uses the Apache 2.0 licence.
Repeatable checks for a font release
Font Bakery groups checks into profiles such as check-universal, check-googlefonts and foundry-specific profiles. Most checks examine OpenType binaries or project metadata, including Google Fonts metadata files. Choose the profile that matches the intended release route and inspect its individual results.
The documentation provides separate installation guides for Windows, macOS and GNU/Linux, followed by a command-line usage guide. Developers can write custom Python checks or run the same profile after each change through continuous integration, an automated build-and-check process.
Font Bakery links a repository template for building, checking and proofing fonts with GitHub Actions. These checks address defined technical rules; they do not replace visual proofing of the typeface.
