What it does
Fontello combines selected icons into custom webfonts, with glyph selection, name and code customization, configuration export and a documented automation API.
Fontello combines selected symbols into a custom webfont. Choose glyphs, change their names or codes and set the font name and CSS prefix. Custom SVGs or SVG fonts can be imported, and the configuration can be exported separately for later regeneration.
The generator is open source under MIT, while embedded artwork keeps its own OFL, Creative Commons or other stated terms. Generated archives include licence and credit information. The fonts are intended for web use, so combining the files does not grant permission to redistribute them as an independent artwork collection.
The browser requires JavaScript and cookies. A documented automation API can load a configuration into a temporary session and return the generated font; those sessions last 24 hours. The public generator and locally available code provide a free route to a tailored webfont.
Strengths
- Selected glyphs can be merged into one project-specific webfont.
- Configuration export supports later regeneration.
Watch out for
- Combined artwork retains the original libraries’ differing license requirements.
- The site requires JavaScript and cookies.
Best for
- Existing icon-font workflows
- Teams maintaining a small custom glyph selection
