What it does
FontForge is a free, open-source font editor with installers or installation guidance for Windows, Mac and GNU/Linux. It provides drawing and font-production tools, Python and native scripting, and utilities for inspecting font files. The project directs new users to the Design With FontForge learning guide.
The project recommends starting with Design With FontForge, then using the reference pages for individual operations. Its documentation separates font editing from automation: Python and native scripting have their own sections, while utilities such as fontlint, sfddiff and fontimage handle checks, comparisons and previews.
Select your operating system from the download page to follow the appropriate installation route. The software is free and open source; donations support development. Installation is local, so this is a desktop font editor rather than a hosted font-design account.
For a first project, the learning guide provides the route from creating glyphs to generating a font. Existing font files remain subject to their own licences when you import or modify them.
